Vivo’s Rumored 2027 Wide Fold Could Pair a Smaller Screen With Flagship Hardware

Vivo may be aiming to make a wide foldable easier to handle by shrinking its inner screen. Tipster Digital Chat Station says the company is still developing the device, with a display under 6.5 inches and a possible launch in 2027. If that size holds, Vivo would take a different route from rivals reportedly planning foldables with larger panels, putting handling and portability closer to the center of the design.

The report began with a post on Weibo and was reported by GSMArena. DCS also told a user that most of the phone’s hardware components have been finalized. That suggests the project has advanced beyond an early concept, though it doesn’t confirm that the design is locked or that the device will reach stores. The core specifications remain unknown, leaving basic questions about dimensions, performance, cameras, and battery life unanswered.

A smaller screen would set Vivo apart

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Apple’s rumored iPhone Duo are both associated with 7.6-inch inner displays. A Vivo panel below 6.5 inches would make its foldable notably more compact. The diagonal alone doesn’t tell us exactly how wide or tall the device would feel in use, but it points to a clear departure from the larger-screen approach tied to those rivals.

The trade-off is clear: a smaller screen could improve portability, while Vivo would need strong hardware and software to make the format compelling for demanding users. Foldables ask buyers to accept extra size and complexity in exchange for a larger canvas; reducing that canvas may make the phone easier to carry, but it also narrows the space available for reading, multitasking, and video. This is more significant than it looks: Vivo appears to be testing whether a foldable can stand out through restraint rather than sheer screen area.

Android Central's Take

Vivo wants to be different, huh? We've already seen and experienced how popular Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 is. But to imagine a wide foldable with a smaller inner display—thin, too, most likely ... what would that look like? I mentioned people on Weibo weren't too phased by the rumor, and maybe they're onto something. People said a phone of this size, thin, and with Vivo's classic tech might be worthwhile. Maybe they're right.

Rivals appear set on bigger displays

Rumors about wide foldables from Vivo and Honor emerged as manufacturers looked to compete with Samsung’s format. The rumored Vivo name “X Fold 6” has been ruled out, but the latest leak offers an early clue to the company’s design priorities. It also hints at a crowded category in which screen size could become one of the clearest ways for brands to distinguish their devices.

Honor’s reported device is expected to have a 7.6-inch inner screen, a 5.5-inch cover display, and a battery rated at 7,000mAh or more. OPPO’s rumored foldable also points to a 7.6-inch main display and 5.5-inch cover, paired with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. OPPO could introduce its model in the first quarter of 2027. These details remain reports about unreleased products, so they’re useful as indications of direction rather than firm specifications or launch commitments.

Those larger panels suggest that competitors may be treating the open screen as the main attraction. Vivo’s reported choice would ask a different question: how much display do people actually want to carry every day? If you're working in this space, the answer matters beyond the spec sheet; a smaller inner display could affect weight, one-handed use, and the kinds of tasks a foldable handles comfortably. And yet, without confirmed dimensions or hands-on testing, the portability case is still only a plausible argument.

What the design choice could mean

Vivo’s smaller-screen idea remains unconfirmed, but it gives the company a distinct position among the rumored wide foldables. A compact panel could help the phone feel less cumbersome, while asking Vivo to show that its software makes good use of the available space. The device would need to feel considered in everyday use. That’s the test.

Most hardware components may be finalized, according to DCS, but that doesn’t settle the questions that will shape the product: the final screen dimensions, the cover display, the hinge and overall thickness, and how Vivo balances battery life with a smaller body. The leak provides a design clue, not a complete picture. Until those details emerge, the key question is whether Vivo’s hardware can make a more compact display feel like a deliberate advantage rather than a compromise.
